Common causes — from cheap to expensive
- Bad power supply (PSU). Very common on desktops. Often a $50–$150 part swap.
- Failed power button or button connector. Cheap fix.
- Loose RAM or RAM failure. Sometimes RAM works its way loose and just needs reseating. Sometimes it's failed.
- Dead CMOS battery. The little watch battery on the motherboard. Easy and cheap to replace.
- Bad charger or charging port (laptops). Charger died, port damaged, battery completely depleted to the point of not waking up.
- Failed motherboard. The most expensive scenario. Sometimes worth fixing on a newer machine, often the point where replacement makes more sense on an older one.
- Storage drive failed. The computer powers on but won't boot. Often confused with "won't turn on." Very fixable, and we can usually save your files.
Try this BEFORE bringing it in (free)
Save yourself a trip if it's something simple:
- Desktop: Make sure the power switch on the back of the PSU is set to On. Check that the power cable is fully seated. Try a different outlet. Hold the power button for 30 seconds with the cable unplugged, then plug back in and try.
- Laptop: Plug it in for 30 minutes and try again — it might just be completely drained. Try a different charger if you have one. Remove the battery (if removable), hold power for 30 seconds, reattach battery, plug in, try again.
If none of that works, bring it in. The diagnosis is free.
What we do
- Free diagnosis. We test power supply output, RAM, motherboard, and storage in our shop with proper diagnostic tools — not guesswork.
- Tell you exactly what's wrong. No surprise charges, no upselling. You get a clear answer: "It's the power supply, costs $X to fix" or "Sorry, motherboard's gone, here are your real options."
- Recover your files first. If repair isn't the right call, we can still rescue your photos, documents, and everything important off the drive. Often free with a new computer setup.
Don't panic about your files. Even if the computer itself can't be fixed, your data is almost always recoverable. We pull files off "dead" computers all the time. Learn more about data recovery →
