Why is your computer slow?
Slow computers usually come down to a handful of fixable causes:
- Old mechanical hard drive. If your computer still uses a spinning hard drive (HDD), upgrading to a solid-state drive (SSD) often makes it 5–10x faster. This is the single biggest performance upgrade you can make.
- Not enough RAM. If you have 4GB or less, modern Windows is painful. Upgrading to 8GB or 16GB makes a huge difference.
- Too many startup programs. Every program that launches at boot is fighting for resources. We trim startup down to only what you actually need.
- Bloatware and junk. Years of installs, browser toolbars, "PC cleaners," and free trials add up. We clean it out properly.
- Virus or malware. Malware burns CPU, slows down browsers, and hogs memory. Virus removal often fixes "mystery slowness."
- Failing drive. Sometimes slowness means your hard drive is dying. We test it. If it's failing, we replace it before you lose data.
The SSD upgrade — our most-recommended fix
If your computer is more than 4–5 years old and feels sluggish, swapping the hard drive for an SSD is almost always worth it. We've had customers in tears (the good kind) over how much faster their machine boots after this upgrade. Boot times typically drop from 3–5 minutes to 15–20 seconds.
Real example: A North Ridgeville customer brought in a 6-year-old laptop that took over 5 minutes to boot. After an SSD upgrade and tune-up, it boots in 18 seconds. Total cost: less than 20% of a new laptop.
How we diagnose slowness
We don't just guess. We run hardware diagnostics, check drive health, look at startup programs, scan for malware, and identify exactly what's slowing you down. Then we give you a clear quote with a few options — sometimes a simple cleanup works, sometimes a hardware upgrade is the right call. We tell you the truth either way.
How long does it take?
A speed tune-up is usually same-day. An SSD upgrade including data transfer is typically same-day or next-day depending on the size of your data.
